Program Overview
The Ph.D. in Philology and Ancient History is an interdisciplinary education aimed at correct reading and interpreting ancient texts, both literary and epigraphic, of the West and East Mediterranean as well as of the Near and Middle East. The program focuses on providing a full understanding of the cultural, political, economic, and social history of the ancient Greek, Roman, and Near-Eastern world.
Educational Goals
The scientific task of the Ph.D. program is to educate students in the following areas:
- Philological section:
- Mycenean Philology
- Greek and Latin literature of different ages
- Classical philology
- History of the Greek and Roman theatre
- Historical section:
- History of Greek colonization
- Roman conquest of Italy and its administration
- Epigraphy as a means of communication
- Surviving themes of ancient culture and their forms
- Historical geography
- Section of philology of the Near- and Middle East:
- Anatolian studies
- Assyriology
- Coptology
- Jewish studies
- Egyptology
- Iranian studies
- Semitic epigraphy and philology
