Program Overview

Program Overview

The Master's Degree Program in Design, Visual and Multimedia Communication aims to train designers capable of promoting innovation dynamics in products and systems of Visual and Multimedia Communication. The program focuses on forming designers who can operate in all advanced sectors of communication, from multimedia publishing to web design, and from project systems to image coordination and brand identity.

Objectives

The program's specific objectives are to:

  • Form designers with in-depth knowledge of Visual and Multimedia Communication products, including their content, technical, functional, and formal aspects.
  • Equip students with knowledge of the context of elaboration, production, and use of Visual and Multimedia Communication products, focusing on qualitative aspects that improve perception and enjoyment of an environment.
  • Provide students with in-depth knowledge of brand identity construction dynamics in relation to service system design associated with communication products, sales, and communication places.
  • Offer specific knowledge that applies Visual and Multimedia Communication design in areas such as exhibit design, performing arts, and space design, enabling the application of communication strategies in public and private spaces.
  • Ensure students possess knowledge of socio-cultural reference contexts, usage and consumption dynamics of communication products, and market dynamics related to the impact on productive, communicative, and distributive strategies of enterprises.
  • Provide students with a broad preparation in historical-critical disciplines and human sciences, offering interpretive tools for various application contexts of project practice.
  • Develop students' relational and group work management skills within complex projects.
  • Enable students to fluently use, in written and oral form, at least one European Union language besides Italian, with reference to disciplinary lexicons.

Program Structure

The program is structured over two years, integrating theoretical knowledge and laboratory activities in the discipline of Visual and Multimedia Communication design. The first year focuses on acquiring knowledge and competencies regarding:

  • Historical-social characteristics that have led to the definition and evolution of different performing arts.
  • Historical and social characters related to complex themes of typography and editorial graphics, understanding their strategic implications for integrated communication models.
  • Historical and social characters related to complex themes of brand design, understanding their strategic implications for methods and tools of integrated communication.
  • Planning and management of communication activities for public and private organizations.
  • Technical characters related to different representation languages, understanding their strategic implications for visual communication tools and models.
  • Problematics, development, and technical elaboration of visual products in the context of identity, editorial, and advertising graphics, with particular attention to storytelling systems and models.
  • Problematics, development, and technical elaboration of visual products in the context of multimedia graphics, with applications in the design of audiovisual artifacts, interfaces, and web, also considering aspects related to interaction and immersivity.
  • Critical reading of images, particularly photographic ones, in service of traditional and multimedia communication.
  • Problematics, development, and technical elaboration for the design of public and/or private installations with high technological and scenic performativity, including analysis of spatial behaviors.

The second year focuses on acquiring knowledge and competencies regarding:

  • Problematics, development, and technical elaboration of visual products in the context of game design, with applications in the design of interactive virtual artifacts.
  • Learning processes and strategies for translating complex data into simple infographics and images, using data and visual storytelling models and strategies.
  • Application of communication design for digital education and the valorization of museum cultural heritage, emphasizing socio-cultural variables that influence design choices.
  • Elaboration of complex data and information, developing critical readings of phenomena and analyzing them critically, with specific consequences for design choices, particularly focusing on social and environmental aspects.
  • Ability in research aimed at consolidating and/or redefining knowledge, tools, methodologies, and techniques specific to Visual and Multimedia Communication design.

Final Stage

The final stage of the two-year program involves acquiring "other useful knowledge for insertion into the world of work" through participation in integrative courses, seminars, workshops, and internships, both in Italy and abroad. The definition of the percentage of hours/CFU to be allocated to individual study activity refers to the Didactic Regulation.
