Program Overview

Introduction to the Nanotechnology Engineering Program

The Master's Degree in Nanotechnology Engineering aims to provide students with advanced scientific and professional training, enabling them to enter the international context of nanotechnology.

Objectives

The primary objective of the program is to form a new class of master's degree holders who possess a deep understanding of the fundamental aspects of nanotechnology, as well as the design, implementation, and organizational skills typical of engineers. The program seeks to prepare engineers who can master the techniques necessary to manipulate matter at the micro and nanoscale, with the goal of conceiving, designing, realizing, and controlling devices, processes, and systems that operate at the microscopic level.

Program Structure

The program is divided into two parallel paths, one for students from the national university system and one for students from international institutions. The latter path is taught entirely in English, while the former is taught partially in Italian and partially in English. This division allows Italian students to obtain a master's degree in nanotechnology engineering by following a partially Italian-taught path, although this option is not encouraged due to the international nature of the field.

Educational Goals

The program's primary educational goal is to develop students' ability to:

  • Manage and utilize micro- and nanotechnologies for the development of materials, biotechnologies, and processes aimed at creating new micro- and nano-devices;
  • Design using simulation methods at the atomic and mesoscale levels, new micro
    ano-devices for specific functional and multifunctional applications;
  • Design and manage complex micro- and nano-systems;
  • Understand and manage the risks and safety issues related to the use of nanotechnology.

Curriculum

The program is structured over two years, with the first year providing fundamental knowledge and the second year focusing on more directly engineering-related competencies. Both paths are based on a set of mandatory courses, which are complemented by a wide range of specialized courses. The curriculum includes:

  • Techniques of nanofabrication and self-assembly of nanostructures;
  • Surface engineering;
  • Atomistic modeling of nanostructures;
  • Characterization techniques up to the nanoscale;
  • Analysis and design of new materials and surfaces, micro- and nano-structured, multifunctional, and intelligent, for the realization of nano- and micro-devices.

Conclusion

The Nanotechnology Engineering program at Sapienza University of Rome is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of nanotechnology, preparing them for a career in this rapidly evolving and highly interdisciplinary field. The program's focus on both theoretical foundations and practical applications ensures that graduates are well-equipped to contribute to the development of innovative technologies and solutions.
