Program Overview

Chemical Engineering Program

The Chemical Engineering program at Sapienza University of Rome aims to provide advanced scientific and professional training, with in-depth knowledge of engineering, enabling students to tackle complex problems in material transformation processes. The training focuses primarily on methodological approaches and the development of investigation and design tools, allowing students to analyze, design, manage, control, and optimize processes, plants, and materials, as well as contribute to innovation and scientific and technological advancements in the field.

Program Structure

The two-year master's program is structured into three curricula:

  • Chemical Engineering, which can be oriented towards process and design areas, biotechnological-food, and environment and safety.
  • Chemical Engineering of Materials, focused on production processes, material selection, and maintenance in various fields (primarily chemical engineering but also aerospace, mechanics, construction, and cultural heritage).
  • Chemical Engineering for Innovative Processes and Products (taught entirely in English), focused on innovative processes and products with special attention to recent developments in process engineering, sustainable production with reduced environmental impact, and microscale processes.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the master's program can pursue careers in:

  • Chemical production and transformation plants, depending on the area of interest, in fields such as:
    • Production of chemical substances, refineries, natural gas treatment, petrochemical complexes, etc.
    • Biotechnological, nutraceutical, and cosmetic industries, pharmaceuticals, food treatment and conservation, waste management and valorization of industrial surpluses, including biofuel and energy production.
  • Engineering companies that design, develop, and implement chemical, petrochemical, petroleum, biotechnological, and pharmaceutical processes and plants.
  • Companies and enterprises active in environmental engineering and sciences, energy, safety, design, and management, as well as chemical-physical and biological treatments of industrial waste and emissions.
  • Research centers and industrial research and development laboratories in public and private companies and entities, particularly in chemical engineering, process and product engineering, safety engineering, and environmental protection.
  • Public administration as technical direction and coordination, including laboratories and public structures involved in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and quality control in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and nutraceutical industries.

Additional Career Paths

Further career opportunities can be found in additional technical-scientific or professional specialization acquired through participation in second-level master's programs or, after passing the admission exam, in research doctorates in the field of Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering.

Chemical Engineering of Materials Curriculum

The career opportunities for graduates with a Chemical Engineering of Materials curriculum include:

  • Chemical plants, refineries, petrochemical complexes, pharmaceutical industries, mechanical, aerospace, naval, electronic industries.
  • Plants for the extraction and transformation of raw materials for the production of metallic materials and plants for the working and thermal treatment of metals.
  • Plants for the production and processing of plastics and composite materials.
  • Plants for the production and processing of ceramic materials (traditional and advanced) and glass.
  • Building construction and civil engineering.
  • Architectural restoration and cultural heritage conservation.
  • Engineering companies that design, develop, and implement processes and plants.
  • Research centers and industrial research and development laboratories in public and private companies and entities in the various fields of materials engineering.
  • Public administration as technical direction and coordination.

Additional Specialization Opportunities

Additional career paths can be found in further technical-scientific or professional specialization acquired through participation in second-level master's programs or, after passing the admission exam, in research doctorates in the field of Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering.
