Professional Opportunities
The figure of the Midwife is regulated by Decree 14 September 1994 n. 740 and subsequent amendments.
- The Midwife belongs to the group of intellectual professions "recognized", i.e., those for which membership in specific registers or lists is mandatory.
- The Midwife obtains the qualification through the final exam, at the end of the training course of the Degree in Midwifery.
- With the entry into force of Law n. 42 "Provisions on health professions", the Midwife has lost the denomination of auxiliary health profession to become a health profession.
- This Law recognizes the three fundamental rights of an intellectual profession:
- autonomy of decision,
- cultural and operational independence;
- professional responsibility.
- The operational areas of competence of the Midwife are the gynecological, neonatal, and obstetric areas.
- In these contexts, the Midwife takes care of the person from both a clinical (midwifery cure) and support (midwifery care) point of view, as well as educational/informative (midwifery educator).
Competences
For the performance of the functions described for the Midwife, the following competences and skills are required, both of a disciplinary and transversal type:
- knowledge of the main mechanisms of functioning of the reproductive system and embryonic development and the ability to identify potentially pathological situations;
- ability to identify the psycho-emotional aspects related to the changes in the biological cycle of women;
- ability to identify possible solutions to a problem of one's own competence, to evaluate them in relation to the predictable outcomes, to articulate them in the sequence of operations necessary for their achievement, also evaluating their effectiveness and efficiency;
- having competences on the ethical principles that govern the exercise of the profession;
- knowledge of the determinants of health, risk factors, and prevention strategies applied to interventions aimed at promoting and ensuring the safety of environments and workplaces, healthcare workers, and users;
- ability to analyze health problems of women in their biological-sexual cycle and the responses of health and social services to the main needs of women, newborns, couples, and communities;
- ability to organize oneself effectively, setting priorities with efficient time management;
- ability to interact with colleagues, doctors, and patients, even of different cultural origins;
- ability to analyze and understand the context in which one's own performances are realized, identifying the aspects of relevance and adopting methods with respect to one's basic and post-basic training;
- ability to manage the relational aspects connected to one's own activities and to identify adequate communication methods in relation to the different interlocutors involved in the care process.
