International Experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad, both in Europe and outside of Europe, for short or long periods, including thesis research and more.

  • Periods of study in European countries: Erasmus+
    • Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation between higher education institutions, funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and levels of study (including doctoral studies), and facilitates academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
    • The Erasmus+ program allows students to attend courses and pass exams with full recognition in their academic curriculum or to conduct research for their thesis or doctoral dissertation.
  • Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ traineeship
    • The Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to conduct internships at companies, training centers, and research centers with headquarters in one of the participating countries.
    • The program enables students to conduct full-time internships abroad, recognized as an integral part of their study program.
    • The internship can be conducted after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before the completion of the degree.
  • European Alliance CIVIS, "A European Civic University"
    • Sapienza is a partner in the European Alliance CIVIS, "A European Civic University," funded by the European Union and established together with universities such as:
      • Free University of Brussels
      • University of Tübingen
      • Autonomous University of Madrid
      • Aix-Marseille Université
      • National Kapodistrian University of Athens
      • University of Bucharest
      • University of Stockholm
      • University of Glasgow
      • Paris Londron University Salzburg
      • Université de Lausanne
    • The alliance has activated a variety of shared study programs among the 11 European campuses to create a true European Higher Education Area and contribute to the development of a solid and multilingual European knowledge society.
    • The training is based on research and innovative teaching activities, which include, in addition to traditional Erasmus mobility, short mobility, virtual, and distance mobility.
  • Periods of study in non-EU countries: Overseas Program
    • Thanks to funds provided by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and its own contributions, Sapienza offers the opportunity to spend a study period abroad each year, to support exams or research for a thesis, in one of the over 200 non-EU institutions with which it has bilateral agreements.
    • The Overseas mobility provides a monthly contribution of 700 euros net for the first 5 months and 500 euros net from the 6th month onwards.
    • The continuous stay abroad cannot be less than 90 days and can last up to 2 consecutive semesters.
    • It is allowed to benefit from the contribution only once for each study cycle, and the scholarship is not cumulative with other Sapienza contributions.
  • Periods of study or research in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility - ICM
    • The Erasmus+ ICM program, funded by the European Commission, allows students, teachers, and researchers to spend a study/research period for thesis or teaching/training in non-EU countries and provides a study grant and travel expense coverage.
    • All activities supported abroad will be recognized upon return from mobility by the competent Sapienza teachers, as established in the Learning Agreement.
    • Student mobility can have a minimum duration of 3 months up to 6 months (eventually extendable up to a maximum of 12 months, with the last 6 months without a study grant - Zero-EU Grant modality).
    • The ICM grant also covers research mobility at the doctoral level for the same duration.
    • Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator based on the distance between the city of the home university and the city of the host university.
