Presentazione

The Dottorato in Storia dell'Arte at Sapienza Università di Roma aims to provide specific methodological tools that guarantee an activity focused on achieving the highest level of scientific research in academic fields. The program encourages doctoral students to approach individual study topics from an interdisciplinary perspective, inserting architectural and figurative events into a broader and more articulated cultural panorama. The research path aims to stimulate future doctors of research in conducting historical-philological, iconographic-iconological, and archaeological-structural investigations, as well as critically reading and interpreting historical sources and documents from the Latin Middle Ages and Byzantium to the contemporary era.

Program Structure

The Dottorato is articulated into four paths:

• Storia dell’arte medievale
• Storia dell’arte moderna
• Storia dell’arte contemporanea
• Museologia e Critica artistica e del Restauro

Research Areas

Candidates will be required to focus their attention on the following topics:

• Contacts between the artistic production of the West and the East
• Survival, revival, and reuse of the ancient
• Patrons and commissions
• Collectors, collections, and the art market
• Continuity of artistic expressions from tradition (architecture, painting, and sculpture) to new languages (installations, performances, video projections, site-specific work)
• Influence of new media on the language of contemporary art

Faculty

The Collegio dei docenti includes professors from Sapienza Università di Roma and other Italian and foreign universities, as well as officials-directors of Italian and international institutions.
