Course Objectives

The course aims to guide students in analyzing organizations that coordinate the production of goods and their exchange: companies, markets, and intermediate forms. Specifically, students will learn about:


  • The reasons behind the definition of the horizontal and vertical boundaries of companies
  • Institutional models of companies and relationships between companies as alternatives to the market
  • The functioning mechanisms of different market forms and the strategic behavior of companies
  • The motivations, tools, and implications of public intervention

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:


  • Apply advanced methods and models of microeconomics and industrial economics to understand the relationship between organizational design and technological and structural aspects of the industry
  • Analyze the determinants of market profitability, understanding the interaction between technological and structural evolution of the industry and company strategies
  • Interpret the modalities of public intervention and predict its implications
  • Acquire the ability to evaluate the potential and limitations of theoretical models in interpreting empirical evidence and analyzing case studies in the field of industrial economics
  • Illustrate and explain the main theses and arguments of modern industrial organization theory to a variety of interlocutors with different backgrounds and professional roles
  • Conduct autonomous individual studies on specific topics in industrial economics

Assessment

The acquisition of these capabilities will be verified and evaluated during the final exam, through a written test and an optional oral test, where students may be asked to analyze and solve new problems based on the topics covered and the reference material distributed during the course.
