Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation (Honours) is an optional year that follows the successful completion of a three-year undergraduate degree. This program provides students with the opportunity to focus on a topic of choice, exploring it in greater depth and detail to find answers. The Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation (Honours) consists of 50% coursework and 50% research work.
English Literatures (major)
Studying English literatures will get students thinking creatively about the English language. Students will analyse theories, critique prose and verse, and take a more critical look at the signs and words surrounding them every day. This major introduces students to a broad range of texts, novels, poetry, essays, short stories, film, diaries, and letters from medieval times to the modern, with a strong international focus.

Admissions information
Entry requires a Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation or another relevant bachelor’s degree, with an average of at least 80% (normally) in the core Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation subjects or across a relevant major in which the Honours degree will be undertaken. Additionally, a Distinction is required in two of the 300-level subjects required by the major.
Entry Requirements
- Academic Entry Requirements: To succeed in the chosen course, students should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications.
- English Language Requirements: The following level of English is required to gain admission to this program:
- IELTS Academic: 8.5 overall, with 8.5 in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking
- TOEFL (Internet-based): 115 overall, with 29 in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking
- UOW College: English for Tertiary Studies: Distinction (weighted average mark of 75 overall and minimum 75 in Academic Reading and Writing)
