Overview

The Bachelor of Psychological Science - Bachelor of Laws is a double degree that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human behavior and the law. This degree combines the study of psychological science with the study of law, allowing students to develop a deep understanding of the complex relationships between human behavior and the legal system.

Careers

Psychology and Law are intrinsically related, with one studying human behavior and the other attempting to regulate it. Psychological research also has significant impact on the law, investigating areas such as witness misidentification, interrogation techniques of law enforcement, and false confessions. Interpersonal skills in identifying client goals, negotiation and mediation, and an empathetic understanding with a client are cornerstones of both psychology and law, making this degree an advantageous combination.

Accreditation & Professional Recognition

The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board. By completing your law degree at UOW, you are completing an academic qualification that is recognised for admission as a lawyer in Australia, subject to completing state-approved Practical Legal Training (PLT). Completion of four years in Psychology is an important step for registration as a psychologist in Australia. The Bachelor of Psychological Science is accredited as the first three years of study. To complete the four years, students must complete an Honours year to meet the academic requirements for eligibility for provisional registration as a psychologist.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia. To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

English Language Requirements

The following level of English is required to gain admission to this program:

• IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall, 6.5 reading, 7.0 writing, 6.0 listening, 6.0 speaking
• TOEFL (Internet-based): 98 overall, 22 reading, 25 writing, 17 listening, 17 speaking
• UOW College: English for Tertiary Studies: Distinction (weighted average mark of 75 overall and minimum 50 in Academic Reading and Writing)

Workload

As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.
