Program Overview

Overview

The Bachelor of Research degree comprises research training and coursework, requiring students to complete 48 credit points of subjects. Academic Units may award credit for up to 24 credit points of the degree.

Mechatronic Engineering (major)

Mechatronic engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control engineering to design and create innovative products and processes. This integration of disciplines is aimed at producing more functional, adaptable and intelligent systems. Mechatronics is widely used in various industries, including automotive, manufacturing, aerospace, medical, and consumer electronics, to create more efficient, versatile, and reliable systems. It's a dynamic field that adapts to the rapid changes in technology, constantly evolving with innovations in areas like Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and smart manufacturing. In your third and fourth year of the major you will branch into more specialised areas including: control theory, microcontroller architecture and applications, electronics, mechanical engineering design, foundation in electrical energy utilisation, robotics and flexible automation. This major also includes 12-weeks hands-on industry experience, either in Australia or overseas, as well as a range of industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities. Our faculty’s commitment to excellence is internationally recognised, as evidenced by the consistent ranking of our civil, manufacturing, mineral and mining, materials, and mechanical engineering courses among the top 150 universities worldwide.

Accreditation & professional recognition

UOW's engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries.
This recognition ensures that graduates from this course are admitted, on application, to the grade of Graduate Membership of Engineers Australia.

Admissions information

A range of admission options are available for future students. The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's Admissions Procedures, and the UOW College Admissions Policy

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s coursework degree from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum credit average (65% or a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0).

Additional information

All applicants for the Bachelor of Research must apply for the Master of Research via the online application system and submit a written (preferably typed) proposal as part of their application. The proposal should:

  • Contain, in no more than one page, a clear description of the discipline area or project topic you wish to study or undertake for the Master of Research 48cp thesis; and
  • Conclude with a statement of your motivation for undertaking the research course.

Applicants will be assessed on academic results and relevant experience by the Head of Postgraduate Studies. If successful, a packaged offer will be awarded for the Bachelor of Research/Master of Research. Candidates will undertake the Bachelor of Research in the first year of study, and if this degree is completed successfully, they can progress to the thesis component (second year of study) of the Master of Research.

English Language Requirements

The following level of English is required to gain admission to this program:

  • English Test | Overall Score | Reading | Writing | Listening | Speaking
    • IELTS Academic | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 5.5

Other qualifications may also be considered. Full details can be found on our English Language Requirements website.

Workload

Full-Time Study Load As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

For more details on course workloads, please refer to the UOW Handbook.

Credit for Prior Learning

If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.

UOW values lifelong learning and recognizes various types of prior learning, regardless of how or where it was obtained. For more information, refer to UOW's Credit for Prior Learning page.
