Program Overview
Overview
The Master of Philosophy provides specialised research training for students preparing for a career in academia, government and industry; and to provide practising engineers with the means to increase their knowledge and upgrade their qualifications.
Program Structure
The Master of Philosophy comprises 24 credit points of coursework and a 72 credit point thesis.
Civil Engineering Specialisation
Learn to build and maintain the infrastructure of advanced modern living when you study to become a civil engineer. Using computer technologies and advanced materials, civil engineers design structures that meet the needs of a growing population while protecting the environment, reducing dangers from natural phenomena and considering the future needs of the community. In the civil engineering specialisation, you will learn about sustainable infrastructure, environmental protection, resource conservation, and the traditional disciplines of structural, geotechnical and transportation engineering.

UOW's engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries.
Admissions Information
- Entry Requirements:
- An Honours degree with 2nd Class Division 2 or higher,
- A coursework master’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 60+ or a GPA of 2.8 out of 4.
- Research-related and professional experience will also be considered when assessing qualifications.
- English Language Requirements:
- IELTS Academic: Overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
- TOEFL (Internet-based): Overall score of 86, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 18 in writing, 17 in listening, and 17 in speaking.
- Workload:
- Full-time students can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week.
- Credit for Prior Learning:
- If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.
