Program Overview


Master of Philosophy - Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities

The Master of Philosophy is a specialised research degree for students whose future career will require them to conduct, interpret and apply the findings of research. It may also be used as a pathway to higher degree research programs such as the Doctor of Philosophy.


Overview

24 credit points of this degree is coursework with the remainder of the program used to conduct a supervised research project, comprising a 72 credit point research thesis. Students may be required to attend lectures in relevant topics from time to time throughout the program.

  • Entry Requirements:
    • Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia.
  • English Language Requirements:
    • The following level of English is required to gain admission to this program:
      • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, 6.0 in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking
      • TOEFL (Internet-based): 86 overall, 18 in Reading, 18 in Writing, 17 in Listening, and 17 in Speaking
      • UOW College: English for Tertiary Studies: Credit (weighted average mark of 65 overall and minimum 50 in Academic Reading and Writing)
  • Workload:
    • Full-Time Study Load: As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week.
  • Credit for Prior Learning:
    • If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.
