Program Overview


Master of Professional Accounting

The Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) is designed for students who want to advance their career in the accounting profession. The learning experience and knowledge areas for this program are focused on the practice of accounting.


Overview

The course first introduces the fundamental principles of accounting, economics, and aspects of the economic system and then proceeds to the study of specific knowledge areas which are vital for accounting professionals.


You will develop knowledge and skills to apply accounting principles in the preparation and interpretation of financial statements. Equipped with an understanding of accounting principles, taxation law, and the tax implications of business activities, you will also undertake research into current accounting issues.


Additionally, this degree provides the opportunity to network with your peers, members of the local business community, and alumni with a number of social and semi-formal events.


You can combine a Master of Professional Accounting with another business master's degree to create a two-year program tailored for you.

Accreditation & Professional Recognition

The Master of Professional Accounting and the Master of Professional Accounting (Advanced) enables students to meet the educational and membership requirements of CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ, and international professional associations ACCA and CIMA.

Entry Requirements

  • A recognised bachelor’s degree in any discipline with an equivalent average mark of 50%
  • A Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Accounting with an equivalent average mark of 50%
  • A recognised master’s degree in any discipline with an equivalent average mark of 50%
  • Other tertiary qualifications, combined with extensive professional work experience, will be considered

Workload

  • Full-Time Study Load: As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

Credit for Prior Learning

Students who have completed a UOW Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting* will be granted 24 credit points (4 core subjects) credit towards their MPA degree.


If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.
