What You Will Learn

Students in the Certificate in Queer Theory, Gender Diversity, and Sexualities Studies will learn to use mixed qualitative, quantitative, community-engaged, and creative methods. They will be trained critically to engage with the ways sexism, racism, ableism, queerphobia, and colonialism enable Queer, Trans, and Two-Spirit erasures in mainstream environments, and will acquire transferable skills that enhance their capacities to contribute to professional roles committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.

• WGST 112.3: Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies
  • Introduces students to selected research and writings in the area of Women's and Gender Studies, emphasizing the diversity of debates informing the field.
  • Examines changing gender positions and representations across regional, national, and international perspectives.
  • Special attention will be given to experiences of gender inequities from the Canadian context.
• WGST 201.3: Images of Gender and Sexuality in Popular Culture
  • An introduction to the ways gender, sexuality, and identity are represented and produced in popular culture, mainstream media, and populist feminist culture.
  • Focuses on critical analysis and intervention, the production of culture, and a variety of cultural forms, mainstream media, and representational practices.
• WGST 420.3: Challenging Ways of Understanding Sexuality and Gender
  • This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of how queer theories and lenses can be applied to various bodies of knowledge, including sexualities studies.
  • It engages critically with the interconnections among feminist, queer, and trans studies, and their intersections with other marginalized fields of academic inquiry.

Program Options

The Certificate in Queer Theory, Gender Diversity, and Sexualities Studies is offered by the University of Saskatchewan's College of Arts and Science. Students may earn the certificate on its own, concurrently with a degree, or after having already received a degree from the University of Saskatchewan or another institution.

International Students

The College of Arts and Science strongly recommends that international students do not enroll in a certificate program alone, as course offerings per term and program length may not be sufficient to maintain eligibility for a study permit, on/off-campus work permit, or post-graduation work permit when taken as a stand-alone program.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements depend on the student's situation. High school students or graduates, university/college students or graduates, and international students have different requirements.
