Program Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Energy Transitions is designed for professionals seeking to understand how to navigate policy processes for transitioning to renewable energy. This program allows working professionals the flexibility to complete the certificate while continuing to work in their profession.


Program Structure

  • The program is expected to be completed within 1 year.
  • It is a course-based program, delivered online.
  • Students are required to take the following courses:
    • ENVS 818.1 Introduction to Sustainability (students who have successfully completed this course previously will not be required to repeat it)
    • ENVS 840.3 Renewable Energy and Energy Transitions
    • ENVS 841.3 Renewable Energy Systems

Admission Requirements

Graduate Certificate (G.Cert.)

  • A four-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study.
  • A minimum cumulative weighted average of at least a 70% (USask grade system equivalent) in the last two years of study.
  • Language Proficiency Requirements: Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English.
    • A minimum overall TOEFL score of 86
    • A minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5
    • Another approved test as outlined by the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

  • The certificate is 7 credit units.

Application Process

  • Submit an online application.
  • Required documents include:
    • Personal information
    • Contact information of three referees
    • Complete academic history from all previous post-secondary institutions
  • A non-refundable application fee is required: $125 for domestic students and $145 for international students.
  • Once the application is submitted, upload required documents and provide contact information for references.
  • Transcripts:
    • Upload unofficial PDF copies of academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended.
    • Official copies of transcripts will be required only for applicants offered admission.
  • Proof of English language proficiency (if required):
    • Complete a relevant test with the appropriate score before the application deadline.
    • Upload a PDF copy of the language test score.
