Master of Physical Therapy (M.P.T.)

The Master of Physical Therapy (M.P.T.) program at the University of Saskatchewan is a professional graduate degree that prepares students to become effective physical therapists. This full-time, 27-month program combines academic course work with 30 weeks of clinical placement experience.


Program Description

The program is designed to offer students a high-quality educational experience that is consistent with national accreditation standards. Students will graduate with the entry-level requirements to obtain a license to practice physical therapy in Saskatchewan and Canada. The program places emphasis on the unique needs of Saskatchewan communities, including Indigenous, remote, rural, and urban communities.

Program Details

The Master of Physical Therapy program is a full-time, 27-month program that combines academic course work with 30 weeks of clinical placement experience. The program has been designed to offer students a high-quality educational experience that is consistent with national accreditation standards.


Tuition and Fees

Tuition listed covers the entire program with payments due at intervals throughout the program. In addition to tuition and student fees, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs associated with clinical placements. These placements typically last 5-6 weeks each, with some located outside of Saskatoon, and are a required component of the MPT program.

Student Fees

In addition to tuition, students also pay fees for programs like health and dental insurance, a bus pass, and other campus services. The amount you need to pay depends on if you are taking classes full-time or part-time, and if you are on campus or not.

Admission Requirements

The Master of Physical Therapy program has specific residency requirements.


Academic Requirements

  • A four-year Undergraduate degree (120 credits) or equivalent, from a recognized college or university in any academic field of study
  • A cumulative weighted average of at least 75% or higher in the most recent 60 graded credit units, at the time of application
  • Language Proficiency Requirements: Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English.

Language Proficiency Requirements

  • TOEFL: a minimum of 22 out of 30 in each component with a combined minimum total score of 100
  • IELTS: a minimum score of 7.5 out of 9 in each area and overall
  • Cantest: a minimum of 5 in each area and overall

Non-Academic Requirements

  • Completion of the situational judgment test, Computer-Based Assessment Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer Online)
  • Completion of a written submission – a maximum of 300 words (based on a question prompt unique to each year provided to each applicant by the SRS Admissions Committee)
  • Must meet specific residency requirements

Pre-requisite Coursework

Successful completion of the required pre-requisite courses with an academic grade of 70% or higher in each pre-requisite course (or approved alternate courses from an accredited post-secondary institution) and an overall average of 75% among all pre-requisite courses.


  • Human Anatomy – 3 credit units
  • Human Physiology – 6 credit units
  • Indigenous Studies – 3 credit units
  • Psychology – 3 credit units (any 200-level course or higher from an accredited post-secondary institution in Psychology)
  • Social Science or Humanities – 3 credit units (any course at any level from an accredited post-secondary institution)
  • Statistics – 3 credit units

Residency Requirements

There are two categories of admissions for the School of Rehabilitation Science: general pool admission and eight seats that are designated for Indigenous applicants.


  • Indigenous applicants must be Canadian citizens.
  • Other applicants must meet one of the following four School of Rehabilitation Science residency requirements and be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

CASPer and Personal Statement

CASPer

All applicants are required to take the CASPer test. We recommend applicants register to take the CASPer test as soon as they submit their application.


Personal Statement

The personal statement is a specific question, answered in 300 words or less, that will relate to the applicants’ desire to be a PT and/or attend the School of Rehabilitation Science MPT program.

Post-Acceptance Requirements

Requirements of students admitted to the first year of the Master of Physical Therapy program are as follows:


  • Must maintain current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) throughout their time in the program.
  • Must comply with the mandatory immunization requirements.
  • Must complete a specific police/criminal record check and vulnerable sector check prior to starting the program before being accepted for clinical placements in clinical facilities.

Selection Process

Meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the Master of Physical Therapy program as there are more applicants than available seats.


Selection Criteria

Selection for admission is based upon:


  • Academic assessment (i.e., admission average): weighted 60%
  • Situational judgment test (i.e., CASPer): weighted 32%
  • Personal statement: weighted 8%

The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program has 8 seats designated for Indigenous applicants. Applicants choosing to apply for these seats must indicate such in the online application and must also meet all usual entry requirements.
