Program Overview

Master on Reuse of Modernist Buildings

The Master on Reuse of Modernist Buildings is a study cycle that focuses on the analysis and intervention in modern buildings. The program aims to promote knowledge, innovation, and leadership in the sector of reuse of modern buildings, and to train specialists to intervene in processes of re-use of modern buildings at the European level.


General Objectives of the Course

The general objectives of the course are to:


  • Promote knowledge, innovation, and leadership in the sector of reuse of modern buildings
  • Train specialists to intervene in processes of re-use of modern buildings at the European level, with scientific rigor and technical and methodological updating

Admission Requirements

To apply for the course, candidates must:


  • Hold a Bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Architecture or related areas
  • Fulfill the VISA requirements for the three countries involved in the mobility (Germany, Belgium, Serbia, Portugal)
  • Provide the following documents:
    • Proof of nationality (passport)
    • Original and translated copy of the University diploma and of transcript of study results
    • Curriculum vitae studiorum
    • Motivation Letter (1xA4)
    • Letters of Recommendation by two academics referees
    • Exhibition of Portfolio by Architects, PDF of the degree theses for the remaining competitors
    • Proof of English language Certificate
    • Declaration signed by the applicant that he/she is eligible for the EM scholarships described on the SCHOLARSHIP page of the RMB website

Professional Goals

The professional goals of the course are to:


  • Prepare consultant designers at modern heritage intervention offices in Architecture
  • Prepare specialists on Technical support in modern heritage dealing contractor companies
  • Prepare reuse specialists in modern buildings intervention sites
  • Prepare reuse specialists in central and local administration bodies, and in offices related to management, programing, and planning of architectural modern heritage
  • Prepare technical support in museology and museography of modern sites

Mode of Study

The course is offered in full-time and B-learning (E-learning and Face-to-face) modes.


Teaching / Evaluation language(s)

The teaching and evaluation language is English.


Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

The student's accomplishments are evaluated during the trimester. The evaluation of the master dissertation/project is done in front of a panel of professors (jury). Students must successfully pass examinations or academic projects to complete each of the master units.


Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The course aims to develop skills that allow students to acquire a specialization of an academic nature using research, innovation, or deepening professional skills. The intended skills are:


  • A complex combination of knowledge and fundamental theoretical, practical, and methodological references on modern buildings
  • Critical capacity to assess the cultural, historical, aesthetic, and environmental values that this built-up park contains, and manage their safeguarding and enhancement
  • Ability to participate and/or support the definition of policies and intervention strategies in modern heritage
  • Ability to participate in project and research activities on the modern building stock throughout Europe

Recognition of Prior Learning

The possibility of crediting relevant prior learning (professional or academic) will be assessed according to the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra and the regulations of other partner institutions.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Master degree is obtained in accordance with the national laws for higher education: Portuguese Decree-Law No 74/2006, of 24 March, in its current wording.


Graduation Requirements

To obtain the Master's degree, the student must obtain approval in all curricular units of the course, totaling 90 ECTS. The student should also have the approval in the Dissertation or Project (30 ECTS).


Access to Further Studies

The master may give access to a PhD Course in Architecture and related fields.
