Program Overview

Master Course in Building Rehabilitation

The proposed Master Course intends to create an educational offer in the area of buildings rehabilitation to civil engineers but which is also of interest to architecture professionals and eventually to other branches of engineering. The proposed course is devoted to the transmission of advanced knowledge in the specific domains of the principles, strategies, techniques and dimensioning of interventions on buildings, whether in situations of premature deterioration and accident or in aging and natural degradation or functional maladjustment, both in old urban centers and contemporary cities.


General Objectives of the Course

The course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge in the area of building rehabilitation, focusing on the principles, strategies, techniques, and dimensioning of interventions on buildings. It also intends to reinforce students' critical consciousness on the field of the management of urban rehabilitation operations in legal, cultural, and economic terms, and always under the logic of construction sustainability.


Admission Requirements

  • The candidates to the branch of Structural Rehabilitation should be holders of a bachelor course in Civil Engineering (before Bologna) or first cycle course in Civil Engineering (after Bologna) or an integrated master course in Civil Engineering (after Bologna);
  • The candidates to the branch of Non-Structural Rehabilitation should be holders of first cycle (bachelor) courses or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Architecture or similar.

Professional Goals

In this Master Course, it is expected that most students are already in the labour market, so their perspective is not that of beginning a new professional area but, mainly, seeking of advanced knowledge to improve their competitiveness in this specific area of expertise.


Mode of Study

The course is offered in a daytime regime, face-to-face.


Teaching / Evaluation Language

The teaching and evaluation language is Portuguese.


Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The evaluation rules are defined for each unit of the course. The final mark in every unit will be defined in the range 0 to 20; the lower mark to obtain the approval in each unit is 10.


Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

It is intended that at the end of the master course, students have acquired knowledge and competencies that allow them to:


  • Observe, register, and diagnose building anomalies
  • Define strategies and rehabilitation intervention techniques as well as characterize and select the appropriate materials
  • Dimension interventions to be realized (either in structural or non-structural perspective)
  • Plan, schedule, and manage rehabilitation processes
  • Dialogue (in a qualified way) with the different specialties and interveners in the building and urban rehabilitation process in a multidisciplinary perspective and within a construction sustainability framework
  • Develop research skills in the field of rehabilitation.

The Master Degree is obtained according to Portuguese Law DL 74/2006, published in the official journal 24th March, 2006.


Graduation Requirements

The course is organized in three semesters, with 30 ECTS each. The first semester will consist of different optional units; the second semester will consist of different optional units, and 2 mandatory units for each branch of the course. The third semester is devoted entirely to the preparation of the dissertation (30 ECTS in this semester).


Access to Further Studies

By attributing the Master Degree, this course allows access to third cycles studies, limited to the specific requirements established by each of these courses.
