PhD in Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Systems

General Objectives of the Course

This PhD aims to provide advanced scientific training in the area of Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Systems (EEIS). It is intended for national and foreign students. The objective is to foster innovation capacities and prepare them for the autonomous realization of scientific research, strengthening national technological capacity and contributing to their integration in international knowledge networks.


Admission Requirements

Admission to the PhD in Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Systems is open to:


  • Holders of a master's degree or legal equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Physical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or any other related area.
  • Holders of a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Physical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or any other related area, with at least 5 years of academic training in Higher Education, in full-time.
  • In duly justified cases, holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is especially relevant to the frequency of this study cycle, recognized by the Scientific Council of FCTUC.

Mode of Study

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

  • Thesis Project: 24 ECTS corresponds to a written document and will be evaluated in a public session by a jury made up of three teachers.
  • Thesis/Dissertation: The elaboration of the Thesis, 3 years, corresponds to a total of 174 ECTS and will be evaluated by a jury appointed under the proposal of the CC.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The objective is to train EEIS PhD students to work in sectors of high scientific and technological competence in higher education laboratories and research institutes, public service companies, and in the network. The goal is to foster the capacity for innovation and permanent updating from a perspective of internationalization and reinforcement of the national technological capacity.
