Master Degree in Computer Music and Sound Design

General Objectives of the Course

The Master in Computer Music and Sound Design aims to train specialised professionals in the areas of computer music and sound design, exploring the convergence between music, digital technologies, and the creative industries through an interdisciplinary program that combines computer science, engineering, design, and art.


Admission Requirements

  1. The following may apply for access to the cycle of studies leading to a master’s degree:
  • Holders of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in: Informatics, Music, Design and Multimedia, and related degrees.
  • Holders of a higher academic degree abroad granted after a 1st cycle of studies organised according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process, in the areas referred to above.
  • Holders of a higher academic degree obtained abroad that is recognized as satisfying the objectives of the bachelor’s degree by the Scientific Council of FCTUC.
  • In duly justified cases, the holders of a scientific, artistic, and professional curriculum relevant to the frequency of this cycle of studies and that, as such, recognized by the Scientific Council of FCTUC.
  1. The recognition referred to in points b) and d) of paragraph 1 has the effect of only access to the cycle of studies leading to a master’s degree.

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

Assessment is a pedagogical activity aimed at improving the skills and knowledge acquired by students. Evaluation elements include written or oral exams, frequencies, problem-solving, practical work, and projects. The classification of each student translates into an integer value between 0 and 20, with students who obtain a minimum final classification of 10 values considered approved.


Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The Master Degree in Computer Music and Sound Design aims to train professionals who:


  • Understand and explore techniques/technologies associated with sound design and music, namely computer music.
  • Develop recording, production, and composition projects.
  • Know the mechanisms and criteria of aesthetic appreciation in the field of sound and music.
  • Understand the opportunities for dialogue between computer science and contemporary music practices.

The degree or diploma will be obtained by meeting all the required credits (120 ECTS).
