Program Overview
PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management
The PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management is a 3rd cycle study program that aims to provide advanced scientific training in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management. The program is designed for both national and foreign students, with the goal of preparing them for carrying out quality scientific research, autonomously and with integrity, in diverse industrial and service contexts.
General Objectives of the Course
The program aims to train a new generation of researchers, university professors, and industrial leaders. It explores opportunities for research projects with high scientific potential in the area of Industrial Engineering and Management, as well as the diversity and complementarities between existing areas of knowledge.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A master's degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, or other appropriate training, namely in other Engineering
- A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other appropriate training, namely in other Engineering, having a relevant academic or scientific curriculum, recognized by the coordination of the Industrial Engineering and Management Ph.D. program and the FCTUC scientific council
- An academic, scientific, or professional curriculum, recognized by the coordination of the Industrial Engineering and Management Ph.D. program and FCTUC scientific council
Professional Goals
Holders of the PhD in Engineering and Industrial Management obtain qualification for the exercise of functions in higher education institutions (Teaching and Research) and functions that require high skills related to R&D activities in public and private research laboratories and institutes, in industrial companies, services, and consultancy.
Mode of Study
The program is offered in face-to-face and blended modes.
Teaching/Evaluation Language(s)
The teaching and evaluation languages are Portuguese and English.
Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
The evaluation can be organized according to one of two schemes: periodic evaluation or assessment by final exam. The periodic evaluation integrates different assessment modes, which may have a more practical or more theoretical component. Work assignments are also a common form of periodic evaluation. The final grade is translated on a scale of 0 to 20, except for the "Thesis" that is evaluated qualitatively.

The program aims to equip students with the following skills:
- Understand and integrate the conceptual and methodological bases of research in Engineering and Industrial Management
- Formulate relevant research questions and develop skills to autonomously conduct research
- Identify, develop, and use methodologies and tools appropriate to the research questions raised
- Assess the merits and shortcomings of the solutions found
- Expose and discuss research results orally and in writing, either with peers or non-specialists, in an international context
- Interact in a team in a research context, coordinating tasks, cooperating in the pursuit of objectives, and integrating results

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applicants with an excellent scientific/academic curriculum may request the allocation of crediting for prior learning in accordance with the applicable regulations of the University of Coimbra.

The program is governed by Decree-Law no. 74/2006, 24th of March, in its current wording.
Graduation Requirements
The PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management program stipulates a first year of elective and mandatory courses, totaling 60 ECTS, plus two years for the development of a PhD thesis in Industrial Engineering and Management, corresponding to 120 ECTS.
