Program Overview
Doctorate Program in Sport Sciences
The Doctorate Program in Sport Sciences is a third-cycle program developed in the context of advanced training, applying research skills in professional and unfamiliar situations. The program aims to create training competencies, skills, and multidisciplinary research methods in objects of study that integrate physical education, physical activity, and sports training in its multiple social and professional expressions.
General Objectives of the Course
The general objectives of the course are to develop advanced research skills, using multi-method and interdisciplinary research processes, maintaining a balance between fundamental research, applied research, and action research. The researchers trained in this program will be able to use research resources in analysis and resolution of critical issues, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas, and dissemination of original research among their peers and the community at large.
Admission Requirements
The course is targeted at all graduates and masters who, having obtained an initial training of 120 ECTS in the areas of Sport and Health Sciences, want to complete their academic education. The admission requirements include:
- Holders of a master's degree or legal equivalent
- Assistants who have passed the aptitude test for pedagogical and scientific capacity
- Holders of a degree, holders of an academic or scientific material that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty
- Holders of an academic, scientific, or professional who is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty

The professional goals of the program include R&D (Research and Development) and an academic career.
Mode of Study
The mode of study is a daytime schedule.
Teaching/Evaluation Language(s)
The teaching and evaluation languages are Portuguese and English.
Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
The assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. The assessment items include:
- Oral or written exams
- Written or practical work
- Individual and group projects that may require an oral defense
- Class participation The grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
The program aims to create training competencies, skills, and multidisciplinary research methods in objects of study that integrate physical education, physical activity, and sports training in its multiple social and professional expressions. The intended skills include:
- Mobilize research data and use of quantitative and qualitative methods of deep research
- Mobilize research models required to the validation and conception of projects and the research of social context on which they integrate
- Participate and critically cooperate on the definition of policy and community projects with relevance in local development
- Ability to analyze and summarize
- Skills of manipulation of information
- Effective use of information and communication technologies
- Ability to communicate orally and in written in foreign language(s)
