Postgraduate Studies in Economics - Advanced Studies Diploma
General Objectives of the Course
The postgraduate studies in Economics, in their different areas of expertise, aims to deepen scientific and technical knowledge obtained in the 1st cycle. The graduate program, in addition to its professional goals, can still be seen as an interim step aimed at a future enrollment in a Master's program. The modules are common to the Master's program in Economics, and the Master's degree may be obtained over an academic year of study, or less, depending on the choices made during the postgraduate studies. The curricular structure consists of 10 courses totaling 60 ECTS. The duration of the program for full-time students is one academic year. The Diploma of Advanced Studies includes five specializations: Economics, Economics and Finance, Financial Economics, Industrial Economics, and Economic Growth and Structural Policies.
Admission Requirements
Admission requirements are governed as defined in Article 42 of the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra:
- Holders of a Bachelor degree or legal equivalent
- Holders of a foreign higher education degree awarded after a first study cycle organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by an acceding State
- Holders of a foreign higher education degree recognized as complying with the objectives of the Bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty
- In duly justified cases, applicants showing a scientific and professional curriculum relevant for attending the current Course may access upon recognition by the Scientific Council of the Faculty.
Professional Goals
Holders of the Advanced Studies Diploma in Economics have advanced qualifications to exercise functions in several business fields, such as auditing and consulting, banking and insurance, studies and planning, teaching and research, namely in central, regional and local public administration, public bodies, and national and international companies and associations.
Mode of Study
Teaching sessions take place from Monday to Friday in the afternoon.
Teaching / Evaluation Language
The teaching and evaluation language is Portuguese.
Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
Assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for under the terms of number 6 of article 4 of the University of Coimbra Pedagogical Policy. Examples of assessment items include:
- Oral or written exams
- Written or practical work
- Individual and group projects that may require an oral defense
- Class participation Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass. Whenever assessment includes more than one item, the final grade is calculated by taking into account the relative weight of each item according to a formula published in the course outline under the terms of number 2 of article 7 of the UC Pedagogical Policy.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The qualification requirements and regulations are governed by Decree-Law No. 74/2006, of 24 March, as amended by the Decree-Law No. 107/2008, of 25 June, and by the Decree-Law No. 230/2009, of 14 September. The Order No 12 488/2007 of 20 June publishes the course's programme structure and study plan.
Graduation Requirements
The Advanced Studies Diploma in Economics requires the successful completion of 10 units of study in the study plan (60 ECTS). Obtaining the diploma in each of the five specializations (Economics, Economics and Finance, Financial Economics, Industrial Economics, Economic Growth and Structural Policies) requires the choice of courses of different groups - A: Economics; B: Other areas; C: compulsory courses of the Master in Economics - according to the specialization required.
Access to Further Studies
Holders of the Advanced Studies Diploma in Economics have advanced competences for applying to a Master's or a PhD programme.
