Program Overview

The Bachelor's Degree in Art Studies is designed to provide students with a solid education in the field of Art History, working in close articulation with the broader universe of Humanities.


General Objectives of the Course

The program aims to:


  • Ensure a solid education in the field of Art History
  • Identify, recognize, interpret, and value the historical-artistic legacy
  • Transmit acquired knowledge with quality and adapt it to different kinds of publics
  • Stimulate a critical articulation of the different scientific areas related to Art History
  • Enhance the ability of a contemporary intervention on cultural heritage
  • Promote the training of skilled agents capable of encouraging an informed and critical fruition of the cultural and artistic heritage
  • Stimulate civic consciousness through the perception of art as a testimony of human existence and also as an important tool in the questioning and understanding of the contemporary world
  • Foster a critical and constructive awareness of the social and cultural role of art history
  • Promote the understanding of the importance of the artistic heritage as a vector identity

Admission Requirements

  • National Call for Access and Entry to Higher Education (DGES)
  • Entry exam: 18 Portuguese and one of the following subjects: 06 Philosophy, 09 Geography, 10 Descriptive Geometry, 12 History of Culture and Arts, 11 History, 13 English
  • Application score: 95 points (0-200 scale)
  • Entry exams: 95 points (0-200 scale)
  • Calculation Formula: Secondary school average: 50%, Entry exams: 50%
  • Other forms of access (UC-applicants): Change of Institution / Course Pair Schemes, Special Access Call for over 23-years-olds, Special Access Call for Holders of Other Higher Education Courses, Special Call for International Students

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

Assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Examples of assessment items include:


  • Oral or written exams
  • Written or practical work
  • Individual and group projects that may require an oral defense
  • Class participation Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.

  • Perception of the social value of art-historical knowledge

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law nr 74/2006, 24th March, in its current wording; and Ordinance nr 782/2009, 23rd July.


Graduation Requirements

Achievement of the passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 180 ECTS.


Access to Further Studies

Second cycle of studies (Master’s degree).
