Master in History of Art and Heritage
General Objectives of the Course
The Master in History of Art and Heritage aims to:
- Consolidate the knowledge previously established through the use of large, specialized, and updated bibliographical resources
- Understand the contexts and processes of the art object in an expanded chronology, from a critical perspective
- Foster the ability to implement practical projects for the enhancement, promotion, and dissemination of historical and artistic heritage in a laboratory and experimental context
- Promote a high level of ability to integrate knowledge and handle complex situations of a multi and interdisciplinary nature
- Enable the ability to critically articulate the various scientific fields inherent to art history
- Enable contemporary intervention in heritage culture
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Master in History of Art and Heritage, applicants must:
- Hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in History, Art History, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and Tourism, or any FLUC graduate with a minor in Art History
- Hold a higher education degree awarded by a foreign institution after a 1st cycle of studies structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a participating country in the scientific fields mentioned above
- Hold a higher education degree by a foreign institution in the above-mentioned fields recognized as fulfilling the objectives of a bachelor’s degree
- Hold an academic, scientific, or professional CV recognized as adequate for pursuing this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, with an evaluation of 9.5 points or higher
Professional Goals
Graduates of the Master in History of Art and Heritage will gain a solid preparation for continuing their studies in the field of Art History (3rd cycle) or complementary areas such as Museology or Heritage and Cultural Tourism. They will also be prepared to enter the labor market, performing functions in central and local government, private organizations, foundations, museums, monuments, heritage sites, and companies, covering areas such as:

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
Assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently enrolled in. Assessment items may include:
- Oral or written exams
- Written or practical work
- Individual and group projects that may require an oral defense
- Class participation Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.

Graduation Requirements
To graduate, students must achieve a passing grade in a set of curricular units that amount to a total of 120 ECTS, which also include the completion and public defense of a dissertation, project, or internship report.
Access to Further Studies
The qualification gives access to higher education, namely to third cycle studies.
