Master’s Degree in Cultural Heritage and Museology
General Objectives of the Course
The Master’s degree in Cultural Heritage and Museology aims to provide advanced education in the respective areas, ensuring theoretical and practical preparation and expertise that enable engagement or an increase in professional activities, research, management, teaching, and/or dissemination in Museology, Programming and Management, and Conservation and Rehabilitation. The program also seeks to provide updated knowledge, understanding of concepts, and an inventory of supplies, thus contributing to continuing education. Furthermore, it aims to ensure training for a career in the museum field and protection of assets, enhance the ability to organize and implement planning projects, and stimulate, disseminate, and/or rehabilitate cultural heritage and museums.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Master’s degree is granted to:
- Holders of a Bachelor’s degree or a legal equivalent
- Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that was awarded after accomplishing a 1st cycle structured according to the principles of the Bologna Process in an adhering country
- Holders of a foreign higher academic degree recognized to meet the objectives of the Bachelor’s degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Humanities
- Holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies or part of it by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Coimbra

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
Assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. Examples of assessment items include oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects that may require an oral defense, and class participation. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
Based on an interdisciplinary perspective and comparison/coordination of knowledge, students will acquire skills such as:
- Ability for reflection and analysis of museum and heritage events and relate them to social and cultural history
- Capacity to produce research and/or the original application of knowledge according to academic standards of quality
- Apply knowledge and methodologies to work, propose, and find solutions
- Being able to use different disciplinary methodologies from an integrated perspective
- Deepen research skills regarding resources, strategies, challenges, and trends in areas of museology and heritage
- Learn to critically analyze the current national and international museological and heritage landscape
- Enhance students' capacity for intervention and specialized training in professional activities in the fields of museology, management, and planning, and rehabilitation

To graduate, students must pass all specific classes in one of three areas for a total of 120 ECTS, which also includes the completion and public defense of a thesis, project, or internship report.
