Program Overview
The Doctorate Program in Art Studies is a 3rd cycle program that aims to consolidate a course that began in 2002. This PhD provides a transversal training in Arts and intends to develop feasible highly autonomous research projects, develop the conceptualization of arts and performing arts, and promote the theoretical and critical mobilization of the archive.
General Objectives of the Course
The program has the following general objectives:
- Further develop the specialization course that started in the 2nd cycle
- Develop feasible highly autonomous research projects
- Develop the conceptualization (formal, technical, expressive, social, and political) of arts and performing arts in particular
- Promote the theoretical and critical mobilization of the archive in a time marked by the circulation and undifferentiated appropriation of memory
Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the program are:
- Holders of an MA in Artistic Studies or any other field, whose scientific and professional curriculum was duly evaluated and whose thesis project has been successfully accepted by a professor with a PhD who is also a member of the scientific board of the course
- Holders of a BA with a relevant academic or scientific curriculum considered fit for enrollment on this cycle of studies by FLUC’s Scientific Council and whose thesis project has been successfully accepted by a professor with a PhD who is also a member of the scientific board of the course
- Holders of an academic, professional, or scientific curriculum considered fit for enrollment on this cycle of studies by FLUC’s Scientific Council and whose thesis project has been successfully accepted by a professor with a PhD who is also a member of the scientific board of the course
Professional Goals
The professional goals of the program include:
- Programmer, Cultural Manager, or Advisor in cultural centers, museums, cinematheques, cinemas, and theaters, orchestras, theater companies, publishing houses, foundations, associations, municipalities, business structures, etc.
- Author, Producer, or Assistant in cultural and artistic projects in the fields of cinema, photography, and audiovisual media, music, theater, and performing arts in general

- Cultural journalist

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
The assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills. The grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
The learning outcomes to be attained by students include the development of abilities to research and write an original thesis in the field of one of the arts of this course, along with its corresponding reasoning and line of argument. The mobilization of creative abilities in the elaboration of an artistic project, followed by the critical self-reflection inherent to its contextualization, foundation, and analysis.

Graduation Requirements
The degree will be awarded after the completion of an original thesis or the presentation of a piece of artistic work with its respective memory and theoretical grounding. Both must be discussed and submitted to a scientific jury for public defense.
