PhD Degree in Materialities of Literature

The PhD program "Advanced Studies in the Materialities of Literature" is designed to develop an emerging field of research in Portugal, focusing on the analysis of digital materialities that define specific contemporary literary practices and forms. This program aims to reflect on the technological mediation accompanying literature produced in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, including photography, phonography, typewriting, cinema, radio, television, video, digital computer, and mobile phone.

General Objectives of the Course

The purpose of this program is to develop an emerging field of research in Portugal dedicated to analyzing the digital materialities that define specific contemporary literary practices and forms. This analysis of materiality will also imply a reflection on the technological mediation that accompanies literature produced in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries.

Admission Requirements

The PhD program is preferably intended for graduates in Modern Languages and Literatures or related fields. According to the general provisions in force at the University of Coimbra, a program leading to a doctoral degree is open to:

• Holders of a master's degree or its legal equivalent
• Assistant teachers who have passed the Pedagogical Aptitude and Scientific Capacity Test
• Holders of a Bachelor’s Degree and an academic and scientific curriculum particularly relevant, recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Teaching or Research Unit
• Holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum, recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Teaching or Research Unit

Mode of Study

The course is delivered in full-time attendance and daytime schedule, with 75% mandatory attendance at all classes.

Teaching/Evaluation Language

The teaching and evaluation language is Portuguese.

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

Assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, aiming to establish students' competencies and knowledge, critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as written and oral presentation skills. Examples of assessment items include:

• Oral or written exams
• Written or practical work
• Individual and group projects that may require an oral defense
• Class participation Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students should be able to:

• Recognize and understand the materialities of literature in a systematic way
• Produce denser and more complex descriptions of the literary phenomenon
• Acquire competences, skills, and research methods associated with the scientific domains of theory of literature, cultural studies, interart studies, digital humanities, and other emerging fields
• Conceive, design, adapt, and carry out a significant research project in compliance with the requirements imposed by the standards of academic quality and integrity
• Produce research that deserves to be published in national or international peer-reviewed publications
• Critically analyze, assess, and synthesize new and complex ideas
• Communicate with peers, the academic community, and society at large about the field of specialization
• Promote technological, social, and cultural progress in academic or professional contexts

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The legal framework for the qualification is established by the decrees: Decree-Law no 74/2006, 24th March, amended and republished by the decree: DL no 107/2008, 25th June; ordinance no 782/2009, 23rd July.

Graduation Requirements

The graduation requirement is a PhD Thesis.
