PhD in Cultural Heritage and Museology
The PhD in Cultural Heritage and Museology is a 3rd cycle study program offered by the University of Coimbra. The program aims to help students further develop knowledge and skills acquired in previous cycles of studies and/or in their professional activities or other activities.
General Objectives of the Course
The general objectives of the course are:
- To strengthen the ability to participate in theoretical, deontological, and epistemological discussions on methodological issues of relevance for cultural heritage and museology.
- To strengthen the ability to use research to produce new knowledge and new technological solutions in the areas of cultural heritage and museology.
- To enable students to complete and assess cultural heritage and museology projects.
- To train students to work in the areas of cultural heritage and museology, in both public and private sectors and at the local, regional, national or international level, as employees, consultants (freelancers) or entrepreneurs.
Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the program are:
- Holders of an MA or a legally equivalent degree.
- Holders of a BA or of especially relevant academic or scientific qualifications recognised as attesting the ability to attend this cycle of studies by the legal and statutory scientific body of the university or institute where they intend to be admitted.
- Holders of academic, scientific or professional qualifications recognised as attesting the ability to attend this cycle of studies by the legal and statutory scientific body of the university or institute where they intend to be admitted.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The examination regulations, assessment, and grading for the program are as follows:
- Evaluation is a pedagogical and educational activity inextricably linked with teaching, designed to assess the skills and knowledge acquired by students.
- All eligible candidates to the exams must be enrolled in the relevant course units in the academic year of such exams.
- Some of the evaluation instruments of the PhD course in Cultural Heritage and Museology include class participation, bibliographical and documentary research assignments, critical reviews, activity reports, presentations, participation in and/or organization of events, participation in and/or organization of publications, participation in knowledge transfer projects, participation in projects for the provision of applied research services.
- Grades for each course unit are expressed through a mark on an integer scale from 0 to 20.
- Students must attain a minimum mark of 10 to pass a course unit.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
The learning objectives and intended skills for the program are:
- To rethink and analyse the issues of cultural heritage and museology from a transdisciplinary perspective.
- To understand that there is a correlation between the topics of cultural heritage and the areas of memory and identities, cultural policies, and local/regional development.
- To complete and assess cultural heritage and museology projects.
