Program Overview

PhD in Information Science

The PhD in Information Science aims to encourage reflection about Information Science with a solid theoretical base and in connection with other knowledge, develop projects of rigorous research and high autonomy and ability to execute, train for the eventual academic positions in higher education and a non-academic high level, provide a broad reflection on the role of information science in said knowledge and information areas, expand the education acquired in the 2nd cycle and introduce doctoral students to the practices of high-level research, and encourage contact with top national and international researchers.

Admission Requirements

  • The holder of a master's degree or equivalent in information science or other correlated area
  • The holder of a master's degree or equivalent in computer engineering or other correlated area and other areas of social sciences
  • Holders of a bachelor's degree, possession of a relevant academic resume recognized by the Scientific Council as attesting the ability to successfully complete this cycle of studies
  • Holders of an academic or professional resume recognized by the Scientific Council as attesting the ability successfully complete this cycle of studies

Students will develop skills for careers in teaching and research in the field of information science, as well as for the provision of specialized services to high-level public and private institutions or at the corporate level.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As assessment is a pedagogical activity inseparable from the teaching process, its aim is to establish the students' competencies and knowledge, their critical sense, ability to recognize and resolve problems, as well as their written and oral presentation skills.

  • Understanding key issues and research methods in the field of Information Science and related and emerging issues
  • Design, project development, adaptation and completion of significant research following the requirements imposed by the standards of academic quality and integrity
  • Production of research that merits national or international peer reviewed publications in scientific journals
  • Critique, synthesis and evaluation of new ideas and complex analysis
  • Communication with peers, the academic community and society in general in the field of specialization
  • Promotion of scientific, technological, social or cultural progress in an academic or professional context
