Introduction to Portuguese Sign Language I

General Objectives of the Course

The course aims to provide learners with linguistic and psycholinguistic skills in Portuguese Sign Language.

Admission Requirements

• Applicants must be aged 16 years or over.
• Candidates should check the admission requirements available, in addition to the information provided here.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

• Continuous assessment (50%): assessment exercises throughout the semester.
• Summative assessment (50%): final and mandatory, at the end of each semester.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Students will develop skills in:

• Communicating with a deaf person using LGP.
• Doing a presentation in LGP.
• Giving information about the Deaf, Community and Its Culture.
• Answering questions about a little 'story' told by a Deaf Person.
• Recognizing variants in the way the Deaf communicate.

Graduation Requirements

• Continuous assessment is the preferential regime to assess students’ knowledge, which requires 75% attendance and completion of two assessment tests.
• Other elements such as class participation, homework, and tasks performed throughout the course are also taken into account for evaluation.
• At the end of each level, students can request the corresponding certificate, if the course has been successfully completed.
