Program Overview
The Spanish Language and Culture Intensive Course I and II is a non-degree course offered by the University of Coimbra. The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Spanish language and culture.
General Objectives of the Course
- Analyze different grammatical aspects of the two languages.
- Understand, both orally and in writing, instructions and explanations of some complexity in formal or informal settings.
- Be able to defend an opinion with coherent and convincing arguments.
- Sensitivity to error and the ability to self-correct.
- Oral fluency and phonetic register distinct from Portuguese.
- Writing appropriate to the register.
- Use of specific lexicon.

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
The assessment of students' knowledge is governed by continuous assessment, which requires 75% attendance and the completion of two assessment tests. Other factors are also taken into account, such as participation during classes, completion of homework, and tasks performed throughout the course. At the end of each level, it is possible to request the issuance of the corresponding certificate, provided that the student has been successful. The grading scale is 0-20.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
- Ability to understand and extract information from simple audios, adverts, short interviews, and informal conversations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and comprehensibly in basic situations, such as asking questions, expressing simple opinions, and describing personal experiences from the present and the past.
- Ability to understand texts written in Spanish of reduced complexity, such as short news items, informative texts, and simple narratives.
- Ability to write simple, coherent texts in Spanish, using vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate to A1 and A2 levels, respecting writing conventions.
- Development of an intercultural competence that allows students to understand and respect the cultural and communicative differences between Spanish-speaking countries, as well as to reflect on their own cultural identity.
