Program Overview


Program Overview

The Training Course in Introduction to Portuguese Sign Language III is designed to provide learners with linguistic and psycholinguistic skills in Portuguese Sign Language compatible with a post-intermediate level. The course aims to favor the development of competences already acquired in levels I and II.


General Objectives

The general objective of the course is to equip learners with the necessary skills to communicate with a deaf person using LGP in a way compatible with a post-intermediate level.


Admission Requirements

Mode of Study

The course is offered in a Face-to-Face mode of study.


Teaching and Evaluation Language

The teaching and evaluation language for the course is Portuguese.


Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

  • Continuous assessment (50%): assessment exercises throughout the semester.
  • Summative assessment (50%): mandatory at the end of each semester.

Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

Upon completion of the course, students will develop skills to:


  • Communicate with a deaf person using LGP in a way compatible with a post-intermediate level.
  • Perform various presentations in LGP.
  • Recognize identities and information regarding Deaf People, the Community, and its Culture.
  • Role-play and simulations in different contexts within everyday life thematic contents.
  • Translate and interpret texts in ‘glosa’.
  • Recognize variations in how the Deaf communicate.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The course is regulated by Regulation n.º 339/2012, published in the Official Gazette no. 152, 2. Grade, August 7th (Regulation of Creation and Operation of non-degree courses at the UC).


Graduation Requirements

  • Continuous assessment is the preferential regime to assess students’ knowledge, which requires 75% attendance and completion of two assessment tests.
  • Other elements such as class participation, homework, and tasks performed throughout the course are also taken into account for evaluation.
  • At the end of each level, students can request the corresponding certificate if the course has been successfully completed.
