Master’s in Special Education and Inclusive Society
General Objectives of the Course
The Master's Degree is part of the general framework of the process of building an inclusive society, that should be translated into educational practices that respect individual differences and have as their ultimate goal the promotion of the full development of each person and their active participation in society. As the individual educational programme should be included in the class curriculum plan and in the school project, the regular education teacher and other educational agents assume a new role, whose previous academic training did not foresee. It thus seeks to be an option for graduates and masters in education, with some training and/or practice in the field of special and inclusive education, or those who want to develop new skills that they perceive as useful for their professional practice. Potential candidates are also graduates in Educ. Sciences, Educ., Psychology, Social Work, Early Childhood Educ., Speech Therapy and Sociology.
Admission Requirements
- Holders of a bachelor’s degree in education sciences, education, teaching, psychology, special education and rehabilitation, social work, speech therapy, occupational therapy, socio-educational animation, sociology and related areas.
- National or international applicants holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the statutorily competent body of the institution as attesting to the ability to carry out this cycle of studies.
Professional Goals
The course qualifies for the exercise of functions within the scope of Special and Inclusive Education in educational structures, namely: schools, schools’ groups, other institutions.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Assessment, as a pedagogical activity inseparable from teaching, aims to determine the skills and knowledge acquired by students, their critical thinking, the ability to enunciate and solve problems, and their mastery of written and oral presentation.

- Class presentations and participation in lectures
- Projects or other activities validated by the professor responsible for the curricular unit. The classification of each student, for each curricular unit, is rated between 0 and 20 points and students who obtain a minimum final classification of 10 points are considered approved.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
- To train teachers and other professionals working in the field of Special and Inclusive Education, providing them with instruments and theoretical foundations that allow them to design and implement efficient and evidence-based projects and intervention programmes.
- To qualify for the exercise of positions, functions or educational activities.
- To promote the production and dissemination of knowledge, through the implementation of research projects that focus on special education and inclusive society.

Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra.

Graduation Requirements
Successful completion of a set of curricular units comprising a total of 120 ECTS and which also include the completion of an internship report (54 ECTS), a dissertation or a project (54 ECTS).
Access to Further Studies
The qualification obtained provides access to further higher education qualifications, namely 3rd cycle studies.
