Inter-University PhD Program in Social Work
The Inter-University PhD Program in Social Work is a collaborative effort between the University of Coimbra and the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. The program aims to develop critical analysis skills, enhance scientific knowledge, and promote social and economic development.
General Objectives of the Course
The program's objectives are to:
- Promote critical reflection on research in the field of Social Work
- Foster the development of scientific analysis of social, political, and professional issues
- Contribute to the development and consolidation of scientific research in Social Work
- Train highly specialized personnel with skills in design, implementation, and evaluation of intervention methodologies and social policies
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the program, candidates must:
- Hold a Master's Degree or equivalent in Social Work or a related field
- Hold a Degree in Social Work or a related field with an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum recognized by the associated universities
- Exceptionally, candidates with an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum recognized by the associated universities may be considered
Professional Goals
Holders of a PhD in Social Work may have access to academic careers, scientific research, direction and coordination positions, planning and evaluation of public and social policies in public or private organizations.

The program is taught in Portuguese and English, with some conferences and seminars conducted in English.
Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
The final grade is granted by a specific jury, considering the classifications obtained in the curricular units of the Doctoral Course and the quality of the PhD thesis examined in a public act of defense. To successfully complete the course, it is necessary to achieve 60 ECTS. The classification is expressed from 10 to 20, on a scale of 0 to 20 values.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
The program aims to train specialists who can develop and consolidate a heuristic and complex thinking on social and economic reality, as well as on public policies and their impacts. At the end of the program, students must have developed skills for:
- Systematic and in-depth understanding of social reality
- Development of research skills and their applicability in the socio-political field
- Design, planning, and implementation of significant research in the field of Social Work
- Critical analysis, assessment, and dissemination of innovative and complex ideas
- Communication with the academic community and society about the scientific area of Social Work
