Program Overview
The Training Course in Fundamentals of Dance and Movement Psychotherapy is designed to equip professionals with the skills to utilize Movement and Dance as a complement to their basic training, particularly in the areas of education and clinic. The course aims to provide knowledge about different strategies, techniques, and methods of intervention in Dance Movement Therapy (DMT), as well as to enhance self-awareness, intervention capacity, and creativity.
General Objectives
The primary objectives of the course are:
- To capacitate professionals to use Movement and Dance as a complement of their basic training, especially in the areas of education and clinic.
- To provide knowledge about different strategies, techniques, and methods of intervention in DMT.
- To provide a better knowledge of oneself, a greater capacity for intervention, and the development of creativity.
- To prepare for the Observation and Analysis of Movement, in order to intervene in group dynamics, through verbal and non-verbal processes.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the course, candidates must have a minimum level equivalent to a degree. Prior learning in dance is not required, but priority is given to those who have had some form of artistic experience, formal or non-formal, as well as training in psychology, education, social service, and other social and human sciences.
Mode of Study
The course is taught face-to-face.
Teaching/Evaluation Language
The language of instruction and evaluation is Portuguese.
Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading
The final classification is based on a pass/fail system.
Learning Objectives and Intended Skills
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:
- Enhance their body awareness and movement vocabulary.
- Acquire basic knowledge of the Laban/Bartenieff system.
- Explore and identify possible meanings of their own personal movement.
- Understand the stages of movement group processes.
- Identify psychopathologies associated with certain movement profiles.
- Recognize their own movement profile and learn how to use or adjust it in interpersonal communication.
- Build a movement observation scale.
- Write a report on their own movement profile.

The course operates under the rules of creation and operation of non-degree courses at the University of Coimbra.
