PhD in Heritages of Portuguese Influence

The PhD in Heritages of Portuguese Influence is a 3rd cycle study program offered by the University of Coimbra. The program aims to provide advanced training in research methods and knowledge production, with a focus on the history, historiography, and ideologies of Portuguese cultural influence.


General Objectives of the Course

The general objectives of the course are:


  • Construction of a referential of in-depth knowledge about the history, historiography, and ideologies of the Portuguese processes that generated the various forms of Portuguese cultural influence
  • Contact with diverse forms and patrimonial manifestations in the widest scope with Portuguese cultural influence
  • Development of advanced critical and methodological tools
  • Deepening of disciplinary views without abandoning inter/transdisciplinary reflection exercises
  • Territorial contextualization of the heritage, considering the geo-human dynamics
  • Reflection on the opportunities for cooperation and development, the potential conflicts over heritage and heritage processes
  • Reciprocal awareness between the components of programmatic and technical action in heritage
  • Construction of a theoretical framework of reference on narrowing the convergence between cultural heritage and sustainable development
  • Development of autonomous research culminating in the doctoral dissertation

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for the program are:


  • Holders of a master's degree or legal equivalent
  • Holders of a bachelor's degree in any disciplinary field of Arts (including Architecture), Social Sciences, and Humanities
  • Holders of an academic or scientific CV especially relevant and recognized as attesting the necessary competences for the accomplishment of this cycle of studies by the Academic Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research
  • Holders of a school, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the necessary competences to carry out this cycle of studies by the Academic Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

The assessment will be made based on participation in the activities of the seminar and completion of a final essay or report through a scale 0-20. In the two tutorial courses, the assessment will be made by a jury that will discuss and evaluate the respective Qualification Report and Thesis in a viva's session.


Learning Objectives and Intended Skills

The course aims to provide students with advanced training in research methods and knowledge production, as well as group working and international networks skills. The course also intends to provide students with extensive cultural frameworks on the central theme of the course and the geography, resources, locations, and narratives that make up these cultural universes.

The graduation requirements are the approval of the 240 ECTS provided for in the study plan, of which the last 150 correspond to a doctoral thesis on the generic theme of Heritages of Portuguese Influence, and specific to the branch of the chosen specialty, which complies with the legal and academically recognized requirements for that.
