Program Overview


Clinical Investigation, PhD

The PhD in Clinical Investigation program is designed to train clinicians for careers as leaders in academic medical research, advancing our understanding of the diagnosis, screening, treatment, and prognosis of clinical conditions and promoting evidence-based changes to clinical practice. Through this program, graduates will learn to effectively and efficiently design, implement, analyze, and interpret clinical research to improve human health and clinical practice.


Program Competencies

Upon completion of the program, the graduate should be able to:


  1. Critique the validity of clinical research.
  2. Propose a clinical research question informed by the existing literature.
  3. Analyze study designs commonly used in clinical research.
  4. Develop a grant proposal for a clinical research study.
  5. Integrate ethics and regulatory requirements into clinical research studies.

Program Requirements

The PhD in Clinical Investigation requires 48-49 credits that include:
