Program Overview
International Health & Sustainable Development, MPH
The International Health and Sustainable Development (IHSD) Program at Tulane provides professional public health training in:
- the major health problems facing vulnerable populations globally and their underlying causes
- how to assess the prevalence and consequences of these problems
- how to mitigate these problems through programs, policy, and research
- how to evaluate the effectiveness of program and policy efforts
The curriculum and applied learning opportunities draw upon Tulane's extensive overseas research, technical assistance work, and nearly four decades of experience in providing leadership training in international health to students from around the world. Coursework and learning opportunities are designed to emphasize the importance of cultural, social, and behavioral factors influencing health.
Program Competencies
- Analyze key global public health problems linked to development
- Examine the roles and relationships of organizations influencing global health, and key sources of funding for global health programs
- Develop a theory-based public health intervention or program
- Apply public health assessment and analytical methods to address global health problems, policies, and programs in low-and-middle income countries
- Analyze health disparities across population sub-groups and potential interventions at the intersection of health and social structures, culture, gender, poverty, place, and power
