Program Overview

Program Overview

The Basic and Molecular Genetics course provides a comprehensive understanding of genetic principles and their underlying mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, organism, and population levels. This 15-credit course is designed for full-time study and is conducted on campus in Umeå.

Course Description

The course covers the structure, function, and organization of genetic material in eukaryotes, as well as differences compared to prokaryotes. It explains methods for determining the relative positions of genes in the genome and describes different patterns of inheritance of hereditary characteristics. The main areas of focus include:

  • Transmission genetics
  • Gene and genome structure, stability, and variability
  • Molecular methods
  • Bioinformatics
  • Genetic model systems
  • Genetic control of life processes
  • Factors and processes affecting the genetic composition in a population

Eligibility and Selection

To be eligible for the course, students must have completed 20 ECTS from finished courses in Chemistry, including at least 5 ECTS in Biochemistry, or alternatively, 20 ECTS from a combination of finished courses in Chemistry and Physics and/or Mathematics, including at least 5 ECTS in Biochemistry. Additionally, students must have completed 10 ECTS from finished courses in Biology, containing Microbiology and Molecular Biology. Selection is based on academic credits.

Application and Tuition Fees

As a citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland, students are required to pay application and tuition fees. The application fee is SEK 900, and the tuition fee for the first installment is SEK 38,075.
