Program Overview
Master's Programme in Biomedicine
The Master's Programme in Biomedicine at Umeå University is a 2-year, full-time programme that provides students with excellent knowledge and skills in advanced scientific methods. The programme prepares students for PhD studies or a career in pharmaceutical companies, authorities, or the healthcare system.
About the Programme
The programme starts with a course in Advanced Biomedicine, which covers four Areas of Excellence at Umeå University: infections, cancer, metabolic diseases, and the neurological system. Students are also trained in bioinformatics, biostatistics, theory of knowledge, and ethics.
Customise Your Education
After the first semester, students can choose from a range of biomedical courses to customise their education. Project work on an advanced level (30 ECTS credits) provides in-depth knowledge in a chosen field, or students can choose other courses in their field of interest, such as tumor biology, bacterial pathogenesis, structure and function of proteins, etc.
Build Your Scientific Network
Many instructors are leading scientists, and students continuously build their own scientific network. Students are trained in experimental design, evaluating results, and presenting their work in various scientific formats. The master's programme is concluded by either a 30 or 45 ECTS thesis project.
Programme Overview
Suggestions for elective programme courses include:
- Pharmacology
- Tumour Biology
- Molecular Epidemiology
- Molecular Genetics
Future and Career Opportunities
Biomedical students have a labour market potential in research and development within the pharmaceutical industry, the biotech industry, and in healthcare. They also have the opportunity to become science journalists, patent lawyers, or medical experts within different authorities. The master's degree also makes students eligible for further PhD studies.
Eligibility
