Master's Programme in Finance
The Master's Programme in Finance at Umeå University offers students the opportunity to develop a financial theoretical base, analytical skills, communication, and other important skills necessary for a successful career in the financial sector. The programme provides a good understanding of financial instruments and markets, necessary in financial consulting, financial risk management, and as a business analyst. Sustainability and internationalization are integral parts of the educational environment.

About the Programme
The programme focuses on developing both broad and specific knowledge of key concerns for financial management. The first year includes modules covering financial statement analysis, advanced corporate finance, investments, and risk management. Students learn about central areas in investment analysis, including portfolio management, risk measurement, and risk management. There is also an opportunity to choose elective courses, among which an internship is one option.
While Studying
During the second year, students are given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in one other area in the field of business administration. This year also includes a research method module and a module in current trends in business administration research. Students develop their writing, analysis, and research skills through writing a Master's thesis. It is also possible to study abroad for one semester.
About Our Research in Finance
The finance research carried out at the business school covers a broad range of areas, such as household finance, corporate finance, and different issues related to sustainability. Examples of topics studied include investment mistakes among individual investors, the role of corporate insiders for firms' financial decisions, and responsible investment strategies.

We integrate competencies in our programmes, focusing on competencies needed for future professional life. There is an opportunity to do an internship for ten weeks in Sweden or abroad, which gives a good opportunity to put theoretical knowledge and experience into practice. Studying abroad is also an option, with about 60 partner universities, mainly in Europe, but also in other continents.
Future and Career Opportunities
The programme is suitable for students wishing to work as investment advisors, with financing issues in banks, with cash management, as financial analysts in banks, insurance companies, or government departments. The programme's international character also provides good opportunities for a career abroad. The programme gives eligibility to apply for doctoral student positions.
Eligibility
- A Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, 180 credits) from an internationally recognised university with a major in Business Administration
- Special requirements: 75 credits in Business Administration, at Basic level (A-level) and Intermediate level (B-level) a minimum of 60 credits in Management, Marketing, Accounting, and Finance or the equivalent including at least 7.5 credits in Finance courses
- At the Bachelor level (C-level), a minimum of 15 credits in Business Administration
- Statistics or similar 7.5 credits
- Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6
Selection
Selection is based on GMAT and academic credits in this order. The selection of applicants is done in the following order:
- Test results from GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test)
- Academic credits by the last application date (in the range of 30-285 credits equivalent to ECTS)
Degree
After completing the study programme, a student who has applied for a degree certificate can obtain a Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) or a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) according to the local qualification descriptor established by the Vice-Chancellor. The degree is awarded in the main field of Business Administration with a specialisation in Finance.

As a citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland, you are required to pay application and tuition fees for studies at Umeå University.
