Introduction to the Midwifery Program
The Midwifery program at Jagiellonian University is a practical field of study that prepares students for a career as midwives. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.
Program Description
The Midwifery program is a very practical field of study that prepares graduates to work as midwives who are autonomous and responsible towards healthcare entities and respect general and professional ethics. The program covers a range of topics, including:
- Care for a woman and her family during pregnancy, childbirth, and confinement
- Care for an infant at a hospital and home, including preterm infants
- Quality of life of women with a diagnosed reproductive organ and breast cancer during and after treatment
- The impact of nutrition during different phases of life and states of health of a woman
- Evaluation of public knowledge regarding healthy behaviors
- Multicultural conditions of the care for a woman and her family
- Midwife-patient relations
- The presence of microorganisms in the hospital environment
Program Structure
The Midwifery program is offered as both a first-cycle and second-cycle program. The first-cycle program is a full-time, three-year program that leads to a Licencjat położnictwa (equivalent of Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery). The second-cycle program is a full-time, two-year program that leads to a Magister położnictwa (equivalent of Master’s degree in Midwifery).
Curriculum Overview
The program curriculum includes a range of subjects that are scheduled for each semester of the studies. The curriculum indicates which subjects are mandatory, which belong to the group of elective subjects, which end with an exam, and which do not. Each subject in the program curriculum has its syllabus, which is a description of what students learn within the scope of that subject.
Student Life
Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations work at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls.

Graduates
Midwifery graduates receive the right to exercise their profession from the professional association based on the diploma obtained at the university with the accreditation of the National Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. The study program prepares students to provide care for healthy, sick, disabled, and dying persons. A graduate may work in healthcare teams or start an individual nursing practice. After graduation from second-cycle studies, which constitute a supplement and improvement of knowledge and skills gained at the first-cycle studies, a graduate is additionally prepared to provide special care for women in terms of gynaecology and midwifery, including education, referring for diagnostic tests, prescribing medicines, issuing orders for medical devices, and participating in research.
