Translation Studies

Faculty of Philology

The Chair for Translation Studies of the Jagiellonian University invites you to an intensive second-cycle programme lasting two years within Translation Studies, which is particularly focused on practical translation classes and real preparation for the profession of a translator. The Chair is a member of the prestigious European Master's in Translation (EMT) network operating under the aegis of the European Commission.


Programme Description

Translation Studies at the Jagiellonian University involve:


  • classes delivered in a modern computer laboratory and laboratory for teaching interpretation
  • practical workshops concerning i.a. translation of scientific, technical, literary, legal, audiovisual texts, conference translation, localisation and many others
  • classes delivered by experienced and working translators
  • possibility to participate in national and international translation and research projects
  • classes in two foreign languages – English and selected another foreign language: French, German, Spanish, Italian or Russian
  • classes preparing to enter the translation market, like computer-aided translation, quality management, conducting translator business, characteristics of a sworn translator work, self-presentation as well as many others
  • the study curriculum is consistent with requirements established by the group of experts cooperating with the European Commission

Information Regarding Faculty

Although it appeared in the structure of the Jagiellonian University in 1951, the Faculty of Philology offers programmes (fields of research) that have existed for a long time and which tradition goes back one, two, or even five centuries. The Faculty offers over 20 philologies but teaches as many as 50 languages! It has the A scientific category awarded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, programmes conducted at the Faculty lead in the Ranking of Study Programmes prepared by the ‘Perspektywy’ Education Foundation, talented Faculty students join the group of winners of the prestigious Diamond Grant programme.


Student Life

Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. Graduates

The study curriculum for Translation Studies will provide you with knowledge and practical skills which lead to finding interesting employment. We will prepare you to:


  • run your own translator business as a translator-freelancer
  • cooperate with international corporations and entities offering translator services
  • perform specialist written translations as regards three languages: Polish, English and another selected foreign language (French, Spanish, German, Russian or Italian)
  • interpret (consecutively and simultaneously)
