Introduction to the BCom Part-Time Program
The BCom part-time program at the University of the Witwatersrand is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in commerce, establishing a solid knowledge base and intellectual capital. This program is ideal for individuals seeking to future-proof their careers while studying on a part-time basis.
Overview of the Program
The BCom degree is associated with one of the highest graduate employment rates in the country, making graduates highly sought after both locally and internationally. The following subjects are available for part-time students:
- Accounting
- Auditing
- Economics (cannot be taken as a major for part-time studies)
- Corporate Finance and Investment
- Management Accounting
- Management
- Human Resource Management
- Insurance and Risk Management

- Taxation
Curriculum
The part-time Bachelor of Commerce degree consists of a nine-course curriculum, including two majors spread over three levels. Students earn points as they progress through courses, with a minimum total of 432 points required for completion of the degree. This can take between 4 to 6 years to complete as a part-time student. Assistance is provided to students in choosing their courses and planning their studies.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the BCom part-time program include:
- APS: 38-43
- English Home Language OR First Additional Language: Level 5
- Mathematics: Level 5
For applicants with an APS of 35-37, as well as English Level 6 and Mathematics Level 6, they will be wait-listed subject to place availability.
Pre-2008 - Old Matric Requirements
- English Language requirement: First language - a minimum of 40% (E) at Higher Grade or Second language - a minimum of 40% (E) at Higher Grade.
- Mathematics requirement: A minimum of 50% (D) at Higher Grade or a minimum of 60% (C) at Standard Grade.
Students with credits from Unisa or other South African universities may be considered for certain credits or exemptions if they meet the entry requirements. Students who meet all the above entrance requirements but narrowly miss the Mathematics requirement may consider completing the Maths for Access certificate course for a year. If they pass Maths for Access with an average of at least 70%, they can apply for admission to the BCom degree.
University Application Process
The Student Enrolment Centre at Wits handles all student applications. The application process involves:
- Checking the admission requirements for the degree.
- Submitting the application, required documentation, and application fee before the closing date.
- An Admissions Consultant will be assigned to the application.
- Applicants can monitor the progress of their application via the Self Service Portal.
University Fees and Funding
The current average tuition fees for the first year of study are available upon request. The Fees website provides information about the payment of fees and closing dates for fees payments. Once applied, students can access the fees estimator on the student self-service portal. The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office provides information on student funding and scholarships, including Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships, University Entrance Scholarships, Equality Scholarships, Sports Scholarships, and National Olympiad winner awards.
