PhD Computational and Applied Mathematics
Program Overview
Computational and Applied Mathematics PhD Program
The focus of this PhD programme is to equip candidates with a set of tools for the interpretation, distillation, and solution approach of a given problem, and become adept at independently conducting high-calibre original research. The tools covered in this programme focus on computational methods.
Overview
The PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics offers an open-ended research platform through which you may work with leading researchers in a number of computational and applied fields. Many industrial sectors and occupations are heavily reliant on the ability to interpret problems and creatively meaningful solutions and analysis thereof. Industrial settings include but are not limited to:
- Banking
- Quantitative finance
- Algorithmic trading
- Operations research
- Supply chain
- Mining
In the course of a PhD, you will become adept at independently conducting high-calibre original research. With the guidance of a leading researcher in your chosen field, you will be expected to produce original research contributions that further the science. By the end of your PhD, your publication record, knowledge, and abilities will have progressed to the point where you are an acknowledged expert in your field and ready to pursue Post-Doctoral research.
The computational and applied mathematics department employs world-leading researchers in the fields of:
- Continuum mechanics
- Partial differential equations
- Symmetry analysis
- Optimisation
- Financial modelling
- Numerical methods and analysis
- Mathematical modelling
Career Opportunities
Global markets, technical consulting, foreign trading, quantitative finance, algorithmic trading, operations research, supply chain, academia, and mining.
Curriculum
- Thesis
Entry Requirements
- A Research Masters degree in a related field.
- A supervisor from the School must be identified and approached prior to application.
A candidate will only be accepted into the programme if a staff member has agreed to supervise their research. The onus is on the applicant to contact staff members working in fields of interest.
University Application Process
Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment.
University Fees and Funding
The Fees site provides information about the payment of fees and closing dates for fees payments. For information about postgraduate funding opportunities, including the postgraduate merit award, the University's Postgraduate Funding portal is a database of scholarships, bursaries, and other funding opportunities available to Wits postgraduate students.
