Program Overview


American Studies MA Program

The American Studies MA program at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of American culture, history, literature, and language. Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a university bachelor's degree (or an equivalent college degree) in the fields listed below.
  • Full credit acknowledgement is only given for a bachelor's degree in English and American Studies.
  • In the case of a Bachelor's degree in Hungarian Studies, Germanic Studies, Romance Studies, History, and Liberal Art, each degree will be considered individually, and transcripts from the BA degree as well as course descriptions will be requested.
  • The applicant must have 50 credits (but at least 38 to enter the program) from the field of English and American Studies (30 credits from American English language, American literature, and culture).

Language Requirements

  • English language proficiency is required.
  • Accepted certificates at minimum C1 level CEFR include:
    • TOEFL IBT: 95-120
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 7.0
    • Cambridge CAE, CPE

Application Procedure

  • The application procedure includes three periods.
  • The deadline for application means the deadline of submission of the full and complete application package in the online system.
  • Period 1 (with Early Bird discount): 01/10-30/11
  • Period 2 (with Early Bird discount): 01/02-31/03
  • Period 3: 01/04-31/05

Entrance Examination and Selection Process

  • The entrance exam contains a discussion about the motivation of the applicant.
  • Successful applicants must have a good command of English to pass the entrance exam.
  • The format of the entrance exam is an online interview.
  • Ranking is based on the overall evaluation of academic excellence (based on the submitted documents) and the results of the entrance exam.

  • EU/EEA students: 3,500 EUR per semester
  • Non-EU/EEA students: 3,500 EUR per semester
  • Application fee: EUR 100 (non-refundable) for Early Bird applicants, EUR 150 (non-refundable) for regular applicants
