Program Overview


Communication and Media Studies MA

The Communication and Media Studies MA program at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) is designed to prepare students for a high level of intellectual activity and scientific careers. The program focuses on the social science background of communication and media studies, enabling students to research and teach independently as lecturers or researchers.


Program Structure

  • The program is offered by the Faculty of Humanities, Institute for Art Theory and Media Studies, Department of Media and Communication.
  • The program is taught in English and has a duration of 4 semesters (2 years).
  • The program requires 120 ECTS credits.
  • The minimum number of students required for the program to run is 2, and the maximum number of students is 30.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a university bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent college degree) in the fields listed below.
  • Previously earned credits for entry into the program are acknowledged in full only in case of a BA degree in Communication and Media Science or an equivalent college degree.
  • In the case of a BA degree from any other field of study, the applicant must have at least 30 credits to enter the program from the fields of network communication, economics and management, cultural anthropology, culture science, communication, marketing, theory and culture of media, occupational psychology, intercultural studies, arts and art communication, linguistics, international communication, special media studies, sociology, social psychology, and PR.

Language Requirements

  • The language of instruction for the entire program is English.
  • Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate a very good level of English-language skills: minimum B2 level CEFR.
  • Following minimum results are preferred:
    • TOEFL IBT (Internet-based test): 72-94
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 6.0
    • Duolingo: 100

Application Procedure

  • The application starts in the online application system.

Entrance Examination and Selection Process

  • The entrance exam contains a discussion about the motivation of the applicant.
  • Successful applicants must have a good command of English to pass the entrance exam.
  • The format of the entrance exam is an online interview.

Tuition Fees

  • EU/EEA students: 3,500 EUR per semester

  • Application fee: 100 EUR (non-refundable) for Early Bird applicants, 150 EUR (non-refundable) for regular applicants
