The Advanced Materials (Online) course is a 20-credit microcredential program offered by the University of Birmingham. This program explores the full range of materials used in Endodontology, covering their chemical, physical, mechanical, antimicrobial, and biological properties in depth.

Course Content

The course covers the specific characteristics and optimal methods for handling and placing each material, preparing students for different clinical scenarios. It also deals with the restoration of endodontically treated teeth using different methods.

Learning Outcomes

On completion, students should be able to:

• Have knowledge and understanding of the range of materials available and their properties for vital pulp therapy.
• Appreciate the clinical protocols necessary to restore a tooth after vital pulp therapy.
• Know the material properties of NiTi and its relevance to endodontic therapy.
• Use different methods to restore endodontically treated teeth.
• Know the properties of materials used for root canal obturation and appreciate the need for choosing the right material for specific techniques.
• Have knowledge of the properties of restorative materials and bonding strategies.

Assessment

A 3-hour open book exam.
